
Anyone here modified a Type 9 box, to change to a longer 1st gear? If so, how much did it cost, and did anything need modification (apart from the
layshaft and 1st gear, that is)?
I'm getting fed up with having to change out of 1st at around 25mph, which arrives after about 1 - 2 seconds after starting! The BGH 1st gear
set (roughly 2.9:1) would mean that the first gear change would be at around 40 mph, which would be a lot more civilised. I'm happy with the
rest of the gear ratios, so changing the diff would be pointless.

I know what you mean, I've got the exact same issue, the 1st gear is too short, and you hardly have time react before you are on the rev
limiter.

I think the Granada type 9's have a taller first gear.

I've got a Granada box in my car, first gear is 3.36 IIRC. Although slightly better, this still has you grabbing for 2nd gear pretty soon, reckon
something around 2.8 would be about right. Burton were selling a 2.98 gear kit (new first gear and modified laygear) £300 quid exchange
though.....
Wonder if BGH could supply an affordable gearkit if offered a group buy...?
I've been having a good look at prices - working on the principle that if you're going to strip a gearbox, you might as well replace the
bearings while you're in there - you can easily spend more than £300 + VAT for the gears and overhaul kit!
However, BGH Geartech sell a complete long 1st gear kit for £235, and bearings can be bought as-and-when required, so the price can be brought down.
Can't avoid buying new seals and gaskets though.

Aim for lower ratios similar to the 2000e or the more extreme Bullet.
2000e ratios make a big differerence.
Of course you could always take the cheaper route of just putting in a closer ratio 4 speed box and longer diff ratio.
