Oil Cooler
speedyxjs - 9/9/07 at 12:38 PM

My lack of mechanical knowledge is showing again
I cant undo the oil cooler on my donor car. Iv tried everything i cn think of to undo it but it looks like someone has put some kind of sealant on the nuts and it just wont budge.
Can i do without it?

Ally cooler and steel pipe unions? probably suffering from electolysis

I'm guessing that your Jag engine will be going into an even more confined space than on the donor - therefore I would suggest that the engine probably does need the oil cooler.

Is it possible to cut the hose and the cut the Jag chassis to which the cooler is attached. May be easier to free the nuts etc once unit is out of the car. May also allow the use of extension bars to get more leverage.

I was thinking that but i cant get to see how the pipes are connected to the block and im afraid that if i cut the pipes, i wont be able to fit a new one.

Those unions on the oil colers on Jags are tough buggers to shift.... they are a taper seal so no rubber rings employed.

They do rot themselves together as they get the worst of the road spray.

Try a blow torch on the flats or cut the car so you do not need to undo them. New pipes will cost £50 each to have made up !

In a Locost frame you could just loop the pipes, after all you are not going to carry around 2 tons of dead weight !

If you can cut the body to gain access to the pipe unions place a hammer on one flat of the union and using a second hammer give the opposite flat a few sharp clouts. Go round the union a much as possible then use 1 spanner on the hexagon on the cooler and another on the union .
