2 Ltr Pinto Problems!! Anybody got one in theirs??
mattgriffiths2002 - 18/9/07 at 05:46 PM

Hi guys,

I am fitting a 2 ltr Pinto (SOHC) into my kitcar and have encountered the following problems:

1. The rocker cover and exhaust manifold on the engine are too high for the bonnet and nose cone to fit over by a good few inches. Do they need cutting and modifying?

2. The exhaust manifold I have from off a Westfield I think, made for the engine, will not fit through the chassis. Do I need a manifold that comes out above the top chassis rail or should I cut away at some of the chassis to make room for it?

Therefore if anyone has had these problems as well as me, I would be grateful for their advice and suggestions and maybe if I could see some pictures of how it all fits together that would be great!

Thanks for your time,

Matt

Firstly what kit are you building?

1. what engine mounts are you using

2. Is the manifold off the sierra or the kit manufacturer or a specialist supplier (Dont cut the chassis)

I chopped my sump to make it level with the base of the bellhousing, moved the oil filler to the rear of the rocker cover and level with the top. I used the standard exhaust manifold so cannot comment on that!

Ok, thanks for that,

I think I might get a manifold that goes over the top of the chassis rail then after looking at other peoples pictures.

Also, for the engine I am using the standard 1 1/2 - 2 inches high or so rubbers and the usual mounts manufactured for the pinto. Therefore it sits pretty low as I have modified the sump already but it still seems really high at the top. Has anyone made a cut out/modified the bonnet and nose cone to accommodate this?

Cheers

I looked at hundreds of photos before finalising my engine, in a book chassis most people seem to have the deck of the engine block level with the top rails

I chopped just over an inch from my sump and it then sits 3/4" below the bottom chassis rail.

I added 1" to the chassis height.

I chopped off the oil filler neck.

Result: Bonnet sit's a few mm above the timing belt!
