removing reverse detent

Afternoon all

Looking to fit a gearstick extension to a type 9 box to move the gear stick back. Apparently you need to remove the reverse detent from the rear of the box.

I've scoured the Haynes which does a gearbox strip down and there is no mention of this so I don't even know what it looks like

Anyone know if it goes by another name or how to identify and go about removing it.

Cheers
Nigel

if you look inside where the gearstick fits you will see it and it will look like the reverse detent welded on the remote.

You need to tap out the plug / end cap at the back of the gearbox (which is a push fit) and then drift out the reverse detent which is also a (tight) push fit. Once its out then tap the end cap back in.

You can see what it looks like in the pic titled "reverse detent" (STRANGELY!) - its the bit welded on top. You may also find Dave Jenkins website article useful so here's the link..... http://www.dwjenkins.plus.com/gear_extend.htm

Can I be the first to own up and say I never did that. No mention in the destructions I had in my extender.
What negative effect does not removing have?
Steve.

Have you tried putting the car in reverse?? With a Westie style remote the detent will do its job and prevent you selecting reverse.

I can get reverse, I must say its a bit hard you really have to push down on the stick, I had better have a look.
