tintop problem 1.6 zetec-e
ned - 24/9/07 at 09:01 AM

Nothing major, just annoying me. Engine likes to stall when cold and hunts a lot at idle. Prob unrelated but temp gauge is intermittant and overheats in traffic apparantly. Haynes lists the usual things, just wondered as its a common engine if there's a known part that fails causing this.

I'm guessing it's one of the engine sensors but don't know the cars history as it's not mine.

cheers,

Ned.

Had something like that in work the other week, i think it was either the idle control valve or MAP (?) sensor?

Anyway, i think its something to do with the air/fuel mixture sensors etc..

Try carb cleaner on Exhaust gas recirc valve and or idle control valve and renew the crankcase ventilation PCV valve.

whats the engine in?

on Zetecs, the thermostat can get stuck - either closed or open, so if you are running too cold, or overheating, whip off the three m6 bolts on the front of the thermostat and put a new one in - cheap from any motor factors.

with the stalling when cold - find the ISVC. unbolt it ( 2 m6 bolts ) and fill it with comma carb cleaner. leave it for 20 mins - drain it and refit it.

you can also take out the MASS air flow sensor and clean that with carb cleaner - spray the two "hot wire" elements - its safe - done it loads of times.

Thanks guys. It's only a manky escort, done the cv boots now so it'll go through mot, will have a tinker with the carb cleaner once it's happily passed.

cheers,

Ned.
