Personally I'd go for a known conversion...
Lots of Ford Zetec conversions around (eg http://www.retroford.co.uk/), not so sure re Duratec (I'm talking proper Duratec not rebadged Zetecs here ).

i know somone who rallys a duratec and he dosent like it as much as his old xe duratec has to much power so is always fighting for grip
also i can pick up zetec engines for almost free same for other simalar engines

Zetec definatley.

20XE. A little more outlay to start with, bellhousing etc. but quite a bit more power for an equivalent state of tune, and good for up to 200bhp without having to replace any oily bits (apart from big end bolts). Also a very common coversion so parts are easily available.

I guess it has to be under 2.0L? How about a Mi16? Even better head design than the XE and light as a very light thing.

The zetec is a good budget option, but I can't help thinking you'll be a little dissapointed with it if you are used to an XE.
