Shortening Clutch Cable

hi there,

one of the last things that i have to do is connect my clutch up on my striker.
i originally bought a chassis with a hydraulic clutch but then changed the engine i was gonna use so i now need a cable clutch...

i have a capri (i think) clutch cable and the inner wire section needs shortening....or the outer sheif needs lengthening. Do you know how this can be done or any companys that can adjust or make a new cable.
i have also tried an escort cable but the difference between inner and outer is even bigger.

When i got my cablr for my local motorfactors they told me there were 4 different lengths of clutch cable you can get with the same fittings each end.

yea, i beleive there are several, the capri and escort ones are both diffferent lengths but the outer sheifing is too short compared to the inner cable....

Can you not just shorten the inner of the one you've got?
Or does it have nipples etc on the end that are fixed and needed to connect it to the pedals and clutch arm.

On the MK our pedals just clamp the wire so we can make the inner and outer lengths whatever we want to suit but just trimming a Sierra one.

may be it would be possible to make a clamp for the pedal end.... as at the moment it uses the standard nipple for clutch end and the 6mm hole on the pedal end...

this is gonna require some more thought before i order anything....

I'm not sure if MK have a factory way of doing it, don't think they did when we made ours!.

Just found this other post with lots of different methods of fixing suggested.

The main thing is to make sure it can rotate as the pedal goes throught its motions, otherwise it keeps "folding" the cable and nipping it up until it snaps.

Good Morning James, I've just had a thought about your clutch cable.

Can you make a spacer of the correct length through which the inner will pass at the bellhousing end. This could butt up against the adjusting nuts you could arrange for some adjustment at the other end. Alternatively, if feasible, use washers as spacers.

Just a thought.

p.s If you can use the spacer idea, you can keep to a standard cable which is good when you need a replacement.

I had a similar problem with the clutch cable on the Trials Car. When I asked Speedy Cables to make me up a long cable running to the rear of the car, I miscalculated and ended up with the inner too long. The spacer idea solved the problem

nice one guys,
i think i should be able to find a solution now,
i was thinking it would be nice to use the standard cable incase it broke (also keeps my wallet a tad thicker).
i was wondering the best way to clamp the cable so it did not bend and flex everytime i press the clutch in....

thanks for the ideas i shall have a better think about it later, i still seem to be a tad hungover from last night
