Hi All,

I'm thinking of refitting the oil temperature gauge from my old build but I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary.

What do other people think - is it essential or is a water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge enough (on a standard 3.9 Rover V8)??????

I only use water temp and oil pressure. Oil pressure is a good indicator that something is wrong!

Only if you are going to be towing with it.

Otherwise waste of time, the pressure gauge will scare you enough. I,d just have a light on low pressure so you can watch it wink at you when idling

oil temperature gauges are very expensive - if you fit one it will cost you an oil cooler

If you've got one why not fit it?

I wouldn't bother buying a new one though!!!

Personaly,

On my v8 I like to have both.

2reasons

1, Its nice to have 2 temp gauges as they should back each other up ( my water temp started having a diki fit on the way back from donni.) Water level was ok and the pump was turning so I was quite happy that I had a dodgy connection somewhere.

2, If you are running an oil cooler its nice to know that you arnt over cooling.

I was getting a low oil pressure warning light at tickover after prolonged 'enthusiastic' driving and water temp was normal so I didn't think about overheating. After some guess work about the cause I plumbed in an oil cooler and the problem went away.

An oil temp gauge would have saved some head scratching so if you are going to be using the power often then I think it is a good idea.

water temp gauge and low oil pressure warning light does me fine personally. From experience with previous cars that had oil temp and pressure gauges you end up watching the gauges too much IMHO.
