Only in neutral with clutch out.


Push clutch in or drive in any gear... no rattle. Any ideas.

Also the rattle has got a little less pronounced the second time i drove to the end of the road.

It may be a bit obvious but have you filled the gearbox with oil. Please don't be offended, it has been done before.

If you have a real old clutch disc, sometimes the a spring or two will loose it's tension and rattle back and forth between power strokes at idle. Under load " in gear" the spring is compressed enough not to rattle.

Does it go away if you apply pressure to the clutch without actually disengaging? If so its the release bearing and just ignore it. (mine is new and does it)

If the box is a type 9 there should be a small plastic cover/tube over the pin that the release arm hinges on in the bellhousing. Secondly in the donor the release arm and bearing are held against the pressure plate diaphragm fingers with light spring pressure from the clutch quadrant spring acting through the cable. Either one being absent can lead to the rattle you describe.
Doh time. My box got a bit harsh after about 200 miles without oil. Didn't do it a lot of good. Scrap apart from the gear lever!

Doh, checked the oil. there was only a litre left in it!!!!!! Should have had 1.7L

must have lost more than id thought while ive been messing about with the speedo drive.

Oh well filled up now with fresh oil and seems to have cured the noise. fingures crossed i havent caused any damage.

Made sure to check every fluid level again and its fine with everything else!!
