Pinto timing advice
Shamrock GS - 25/11/07 at 08:06 PM

I am looking for words of wisdom on pinto timing. I have a 2l engine, twin 40 webers and a lightened flywheel, electronic ignition.

What would be the appropriate timing settings?

Currenty the engine runs well but is overheating and I suspect the timing may be at fault.

I have done a search on this but the many answers dont quite fit!

have you first checked for an air lock?

Does it pink when under load? a sure sign the timing is out. Going by what you said you've done, none of it would make me go from the original setting. If it ran on after being switched off or was cooking the spark plugs i.e. they look very white and clean then I say it was the timing, if not I'd rather go for an air lock in the head, especially on a 7 since the rad is so low. I think mines at 8 deg but I'd have to check for sure. Try putting high octane fuel in and see if that cures it, mine never liked cheep unleaded stuff. Pinto's are pretty tough anyway.

tut see someones beaten me to it. God its she still missing, haven't looked at the news in a while.

Try jacking the front of the car right up high and then run the car on idle to try and get the air to come out, if it's there.

Thanks for this - the airlock may be an issue but I can't find a way to get it cleared. There isn't anything coming out hf the outlet between the carb inlets - does that suggest air in there?

run it up to temperature and then feel how hot the bottom hose is

then feel how hot the bottom of the rad is

then the middle of the rad

then the top

if theres any diference in temps then youuve got an airlock problem. if no diference try the top rad hose last and it will probably be cooler and will point to an airlock problem which will not be cured by adjusting the timing

If the timing is too retarded you will get really bad over heating.

Advance the ignition until you get audible pinking when pulling hard from low RPM in a highish gear (best tested for when climbing long gentle slope).

When you find this point retard the ignition until you find the point where the pinking just stops, then retard it a tiny bit more for safety., thois should be the ideal setting.

Bottom of rad will always be colder than the top. However if the coolant isn't circulating for any reason the bottom hose will be at or near ambient temperature.
