Pinto Waterpump problem.
Sebastian - 2/12/07 at 07:55 PM

Hi,

I have a Pinto engine in my car but the waterpump doesn't fit, i have a crossmember in the front of the car and my engine can't go back anyfurther.

So is there a solution for this like a external waterpump and if so which one is the best to use and where to get from.

Anybody else done this?

Thanks.
Sebastian.

What ae you building? If it is a 7 then if the water pump won' fit then you are heading for a bunch o other problems! More than likely you need to push the engine and gearbox back just to balance the car better, if you can't fit the water pump you are also heading for difficulties with the alternator and fan belt routing. If it is not a 7 then the hacksaw and welder solution to move problematic cross member is still an option wirth considering!

We are rebuilding an old Caterham from the 70's and since the engine slots in so nicely with all the other parts and gearboxmountings we would like to see what the options are for this "problem" since this is the only thing that's bothering us, and the last option will be the hacksaw and welder.

I haven"t played with a crossflow but I thought the blocks were about the same lengt as a Pinto. The problemay be gearbox the type 9 is longer than the 4speed and the bell housing may be biger as well.

The pinto is a lot taller than the crossflow and you are very likely to run into problems with bonnet and nose height. Frankly the original 7 is a lot better looking than a Pinto based car because of this!
