Has anyone ever made their own throttle cable? I don't want to go to SpeedyCables (or whatever their name is) as I'm not 100% sure what arrangement I'll need until I mount my bike carbs.

Neither end is too tricky - on the carbs it's just a round lump on the cable inner wrapped round a drum, and at the other end it's whatever I care to do with the top end of the accelerator pedal (I made it, I can modify it).

I'll probably need to do some 'funnies', e.g. I might need a tight bend at the carb end, so I plan to put a rigid tube bent to a nice curve to hold the cable inner. Everything else is 'do-able' as I have a lathe and a heap of brass and steel off-cuts.

So, has anyone made their own, and where did you get the bowden cable? Ideally, I'd want to get some teflon-lined cable, but I'm not too proud...

im useing modified push bike brake cable its got plastik liner

I got a kit of ebay for £10 contained the cable the sleving (teflon lined) and a selection of ends also 2 hollow bolts one for the bulkhead one for the carbs very easy with a bit of flux and solder

If your cables are not too long.
Why not pop down to your local Halfords.

They have a good range of universal cycle cables in all sorts of quality.

At least you can fab one up so you know what you are looking to have made.

Pushbike from halfords for me, cheap as chips

I've got a spare push bike cable, new unused for a couple of quid.

Thought I would need it but used the original instead.

i used a teflon lined, teflon coated gear cable off ebay. the end is smaller, so easier to fiddle into the quadrant on the carbs.

think it was £2, free post

i used a noodle at the other end and the adjuster off the original cable.

I used the throttle cable that came originally with the BEC engine

Wilkinsons are even cheeper than Halfords for the push bike cables.

Not sure if they have a fancy teflon innner but i'm sure there pretty good, most of the rest of their stuff is.

Try these guys and make your own kit up and amend it as many times as you like - saves you having to nip back to halfords or wherever, if anything is too short etc...

VWP do a selection of nipples
or just make your own from a bit of brass rod - if youo need a short piece, I can cut some off - B&Q is where its from - as long as you can drill a hole in the centre, then turn down using a file in a drill press.

make sure there is a countersunk part that you splay out the cable end before soldering - make sure it is clean, loats of flux and plumberes solder is strong enough - not electirical solder.

As an avid mountain biker, you could use Shimano teflon XTR cables, but they are pricey. You can go to any good cycle shop and get any length off their workshop roll for as little as a fiver. That's what I did, although I bought a long bike cable off eBay to start with thinking 54" was long, it fell short by another 54"!

Don't use a bike cable !

You want a push/pull cable.

If the return spring breaks you can "pull it up" with your toe.
