Hi all, Need a bit of advice-
Looking for a position for the header tank but due to design need it to be as low as poss!how low can i go? rad is approx mid engine height and the thermostat is going to be as close to the end of the top pipe of the engine(zzr1100) may even shortern it a bit to lower it!! cheers gary

it needs to be above all the coolant in the engine.

it fills based on gravity, so it can't work if it's lower than the top of the engine. similarly, it won't extract air if it's not at the top

Technically you are right.
All that has to be at the highest point is the airspace in the expansion botttle, but for good measure the water level about 2 inches above the highest point on the water system.
