Zetec - oil leaking and collecting behind coil pack bracket
saigonij - 25/1/08 at 08:54 AM

I thought i had an oil leak in my rear crank seal, but after taking the coil pack off last night, i found ALOT of oil had collected between the bracket and the cylinder head, and there was evidence that it had dripped down to the top of the bell housing ( and presumably seaped down the block until it has come out at the very bottom ).

Its all around the oil gallery plug, but there is no evidence that its actually come from there as the oil plug and 2mm around it are clean - everywhere that the coil pack brackets touches the cylinder head there is oil - a fair bit, but i cant see where its coming from!!!

It cant be the oil breather as its much lower down, and there is no trace of it coming from the rover cover as there is no dribble down....

any ideas?

In my experience of zetec engines - it will be the rocker cover!

A real zetec issue that particular seal - it has to seal around the cam bearing pillow blocks at either end of the head and looks to me like its subjected to a lot of heat there which causes deterioration of the seal there particularly quickly.

Dont get a cheapy though its down to the famously rapid -service ford parts counter im afraid!

its weird though, there is not a single trace of oil coming from the cam cover area. its bone dry... but thats the logical leak

clean up the area and dust with talc.

it will not only smell nice but will be removed by any fluid when it leaks.

Totally agree with Geoff, had the same problem and thats what my dad told me(40 or so years in the trade) went a bought a genuine gasket and problem solved, just double check the gasket as your dropping it on, held mine in place with a dab of grease here and there to make sure it was seated properly and job was sorted.

or evostik or bostik - as done on rover v8 head gasket to keep it in place. I used the cheapo cork gaskets not the expenisve rubber ones and not had a leak. (that is no sign of oil leakage as opposed to not going to the loo ).
