Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out which bike engine I should go for and am basically puzzled by the various reliability and power related stats out there.

I (think?) I'm looking for something bigger than average as I weigh about 16 stone and pretty much all of my mates who will want to play out with me are big buggers too. I want something that can pull strong with an extra 200 kilos plus on board and aint gonna crumble under the strain.

Budget aint too much of an issue but I won't be shelling out Busa money.

Also, while I'm on the subject of ££, does a FULL parts list for a very basic, minimal Bike powered MK Indy exist anywhere? I'm trying to figure out how much I'm likely to spend so that I can sort the finances in advance so that I'm not waiting around when I run out of cash.

Any help appreciated.

i think given that information, you'd be far better looking at a tuned car engine. XE or Duratec would probably do you well.

bike engine's don't favour the rotund, and the experience from driving one on your own to driving with a passenger is entirely different, so driving one with a large passenger, they'll not nearly understand what you get out of driving one on your own.

If you;re not willing to spend Busa money, then I'd agree that a car enigne is the way to go, but by the time you tune it up properly, you may spend as much as a Busa costs anyway (remember, bike engines come with the gearbox etc. as well)

As far as a complete parts list goes, it's all very much dependant on the spec you choose.

Best bet is to decide on the budget you have, and build a car to suit your packet, rather than stretch your pocket to suit the car.

best bang for bucks zx12r pull like sh** off a shovel and not busa pennys approx £1200 will get you a engine and loom and ecu some times fuel pump give malc a ring at yorkshire engines he mite do you a good deal and it comes with all the right stuff good luck with your build paul

Does the ZX12R need a dry sump?? I have no intention of track usage, well perhaps a track day once a year but that's it. That's what put me off the Busa engine? I've seen them for £2000 ish but by the time it's dry-sumped it gets a bit pricey? I assume the same applies for the 14R?

no it does not need it lots of lads just get a large modded zx12r sump done and some fit a baffel plate and all works very well there are lots of 12s out there runnig this mod i may have a modded sump for sale soon as done by mk

If I was you and budget wasn't an issue, I'd go for the ZZR1400

If that's slightly out of your range, then go for the ZX12R. You'll not be disappointed.

Oh, and don't listen to those telling you to go for a car engine. The larger capacity engines don't lose much power with a passenger on board. BEC all the way.

I'm not aware of any list that exists for a BEC but have a read of our re-build diary and it should give you some idea of what parts are required for a ZX12R engined Indy.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm not really planning on serious track use/hillclimb etc so I guess I could get away without a dry sump as you suggest. What about the Hayabusa lump, is that more or less essential to dry sump? That's what put me off it in the first place.

I think I want to spend around £2-2.5 on the engine but adding dry sump etc and taking over £3k would probably be a bit much.

Prob should have mentioned before also.....this is my first build so not overly keen on doing something which hasn't been done before?
