Type 9 1st to 2nd change

I was out for a drive on Saturday afternoon and I tried to pull on to the A12. I put the car in 1st and launched it… when I tried for 2nd it just would not go into gear, in after a second or two I just put it in third and floored it…Thank god for a light powerful car, and I was soon pulling away from all other traffic.

This problem only occurs when I try and change gears very fast.

Is this a common problem ie it’s a slow old box?

It syncro is getting tired – there is no grinding?

It would be better if I started in second as first is too low?

it performs normally when being treated with some respect but it has happened twice now at the same junction when I try for a fast change.



are there any common problems or downsides to the type 9?

Any ideas of or is it just my bad driving.

I read somewhere (not sure where) that type 9's don't like quick changes. Someone else will need to clarify though.

It's cause its a long way from 1st to 2nd and if the gear sticks too short... well, get my drift?

Oh does length matter then

i did cut it short so it would fit under the dash

and first is a bit of a stretch.

I have the same issue....

...I did check the oil level which was OK, but didn't bother changing it.

After nearly 3k miles I have got used to it and can usually get a clean shift reasonably quickly. Pulling off in 2nd also helps greatly and IMHO doesn't do your outright acceleration any harm either by skipping a gear change particularly in the damp/wet.

i do find i get a lot of wheel spin when i use 1st prehaps just using 2nd would be best

The best upgrade i did to my indy was to get a TransX straight cut close ratio box with a long first gear.
First gear is 2.25 which is good for nearly 60mph, and the other ratios are just in the right 'zone'.
Fitted with a quaiffe quick shift, makes a very positive short gearchanges.

The BEC boys are quite used to pushing their cars backwards so pushing forwards when the gearbox explodes shouldn't be too hard!

Having said that I suspect I'd have one given half a chance!

Use semi synthetic gear oil , it will improve the gear change no end. BGH Gear tech don't recommend a quick shift with a type 9 due to weak baulk rings/synchros. If you think it may be the box I will have one for sale shortly when I fit my BGH box

When mine went notchy the three bolts holding the gearlever on had come loose.

generally it is not notchey, but it can be beaten. i will just have to take things slower
