Does anyone know if the mechanical fuel pump on the Essex V6 engine has a non return valve built into it?

All diaphram pumps do -- two in fact.

However Fuel pumps on these engines were well known for leaking --- usually into the sump/timing gear case. Not one of Henry's better boat anchors.
