How do I decide which height of sausage filter to use with bike carbs?

There are 2 obvious factors - how much the trumpets stick out in front of the backplate, and how much space there is in the engine bay - but are there any other concerns?

Also, can anyone recommend a cheap supplier of a decent-quality susage filter with a blank backplate?

I don't know for a fact whether the carbs behave the same on a car engine as a bike, but assuming they do, you also need to have a certain amount of clearance between the top of the velocity stacks and the filter material.

Selection of the correct filter element depends on the amount of room available. ITG recommend fitting the tallest filter element possible, though a gap of 1/2" (13mm) average must be left over the top of the element for air to circulate. If using rampipes, there must be an absolute minimum gap of 3/4" (19mm) or preferably 1 1/4" (32mm) between the end of the pipe and the underside of the top of the filter.

All types of Megaflow Air Filter are available as either a flat or domed (sausage) shape.
