O.K I think I am getting paranoid but this engine install has cost me a couple of quid.
I am getting a tapping from the cam cover, sounds like it could be 1 of the lifters.I know that the XE can tap when its been left standing or rebuilt
but should it clear by blipping the throttle in the garage or will it clear when I can get it on the road on a run?

They can take a while to go quiet
Just take it out and use it normally
What spec' oil and when was it last changed ?

Use 10/40 oil and change on regular intervals.
The lifters are quite prone to sticking. I changed one in my Astra as the ticking was annoying me, and in less than 5000 miles another one had started to do it intermittently.

Obviously means your not getting full lift which may affect performance a little. Probably not going to do any real damage but on the other hand it
certainly won't be doing any good.
Why would you put "cheap" oil in a new engine which has "cost a couple of quid"?
Personally I'd be using good reputable oil, first few thousand miles can make or break a new engine.
Only my opinion

Is it just an annoying problem or can it do any damage?
yep, they all do it. Get it warm, then thrash the knackers off it and I'll bet it'll clear. My racer used to do it 1 meeting in 5 or 6, even
on fresh oil, never did it after a race though lol!!!
yep, cheap oil for running in, if its been rebored or honed the last thing you want is fancy friction reducers, the rings need to bed in properly!
