Rover V8 oil pressure relief valve
darrens - 9/3/08 at 09:03 PM

Noticed today that the oil pressure started to rise high when revving high (upto 5+ bar), sits at 2.5bar at 50mph. I got slightly concerned when it rose that high, possible stuck relief valve??

cheers
Darren

Would be a good place to start. Is the gauge electric? if so try a workshop type gauge if you can borrow one just in case of elctrical fault?

Valves usually stick open not shut.

A tip for getting it out is to take the cap and spring out, buy one of those expanding rawbolt type thinggies, expand it into the stuck piston and Hey Presto out it comes.

There is enough thread sticking out to catch it in a cordless drill chich and you can lap the piston into its housing.

I did this and never had any trouble afterwards

check electrical connection to gauge. also check voltage on alternator.

it is either gauge lying or oil pressure relief valve getting sticky. these limit pressure to 30-40 psi.

Using the electrical oil pressure sender so could be that (it quite new tho). Will try and find a machanical gauge with correct thread to verify.

Cheers for replies and tip on getting valve out.
