I know this probably quite a basic question but I have seen EFI pintos mentioned all over the place and was wondering what EFI stands for? Electronic
fuel injection or something like that? Does it produce more power than the standard engine? Can you replace a standard engine with an EFI or do you
need to change parts like the gearbox?
Cheers
Pete
You are right.... EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection.
i'm not that up on pintos, but i think the bottom ends are the same, so the gearbox will stay the same.
EFI should produce more power

Thanks for the help Ben.
Anyone got any ideas how much more power an EFI will produce? Will i need to cut a whole in the bonnet of my lovely Indy to fit one?
Pete
scoobyis2cool,
You don't have to cut a whole or even a hole in the bonnet to fit an EFI pinto in an Indy. Have a look in my photos (Cairb) and Mark Allansons
for ideas. This topic has been discussed at length in the past, try a search of the site for background.
I've heard that newer Indies raise the engine slightly higher than mine.
I think that the as standard the carbed 2.0 was around 100bhp whilst the injection version was 115, but most of the difference comes from a better
flowing head on the injection version.
Mine with a cut down EFIlump does 0-60 in 6 seconds 2 up with a Kent FR34 cam.
Cheers,
Colin
Colin do you know what sort of power you have with the engine and cam?
Ever had it dynoed?
greggors84,
No, it's not been dynoed, but I think that it is probably >125 bhp from the weight (about 750 kg 2 up) and 0-60 times. I'm currently
looking at simple mods to the fuel injection controller to try to squeeze a bit more. When I've got something to tweak I may get it on a local
rolling road. I've been trying to go the locost route by monitoring it's performance on the road.
Cheers,
Colin
Hmm, i'm seriously tempted now... i love the look of it under the bonnet too, looks very powerful! think i'll stick with the standard 2
litre and then swap it at a later date.
Pete
...and here's me thinking it was "electromagnetic field imagery" as use in the X-files and the type...

Yeah looks really nice, how much of the vauxhall drive train do you have to use for that? I'm guessing a minimum of the gearbox and possibly the
whole lot! How much did the engine set you back?

You can't use the vauxhall gearbox, cos it's FWD. Type 9 box, with special bellhousing.
I got my engine for £90, and i'm selling 2 2.0XE's for a mate (£250 each). They go for anything up to £500.
The standard injection system doesn't usually fit, so carbs/TB's need to do used.

yep, if it's not that heavy. Appart from insurance costs for the younger driver. There must be cost reasons why more people dont fit your engine. Plus i think my XE looks nicer
Could be cost of parts Ben, can't be cost of engines as they are cheap to get hold of. No where near as common as the XE and not as many tuning companies either. Dunno how much it weighs but it is all alloy so can't be too heavy. It is rather tall though, although that's what bonnet bulges were invented for!
