
some questions about timiung chain
1. how can you measure if chain is worn?
2. is it a good idea to replace just chain and crank sprocket but run with old cam sprocket? (cam sprocket is the £££ as it is vernier)
3. how strong is the tensioner? it has a tiny hair spring but with ratchet that I assumes pushes the tensioner forwards but never back due to
serations - so if tensioner is loose, then the rubber is worn?
Its good practice to replace both cogs and the chain at the same time as having an old cog will just reduce the life of the new chain. For piece of
mind I'd personally replace it all including any wearing parts on the tensioner as the consequences for the engine if the chain let go are worse
than that for a snapped belt. Anyway I expect you will be caning this motor to an inch of its life

I was always told not to fit a vernier gear on a crossflow, use offset dowels instead.
Verniers can move and they're a sod to get to inside the timing cover - unlike pintos etc.
