I've just fitted a BGH Type 9
John Bonnett - 15/4/08 at 08:27 AM

My new BGH uprated Type 9 box is now in and late last night, I went for a blat.

The transformation is incredible. The intermediate gears are a bit shorter than on the Tran-X Rocket box that was fitted and the acceleration can only be described as "Blistering". Having also changed the twin plate paddle clutch for an AP Racing diaphragm type with a heavier flywheel, I now have the luxury of a progressive take off rather than the on/off switch of the racing clutch. The final benefit of the new box is the 5th gear. 70mph at 3000revs is fantastic and should ensure a very enjoyable trip to Laon and back.

For anyone contemplating a change to a Type 9 the substitution was surprisingly easy. Compared with an RS2000 box, the gear lever comes out of the tunnel in about the same place and the box itself is only about 5mm longer. The mounting is about 75mm further back. The casing is a bit more bulky and so on my car anyway, chassis to box clearance was much reduced but it has fitted and does not bang on the chassis. The only item of slight concern is the speedo take-off which is some inches further towards the rear. Access is easier but the cable has a tighter bend than I would have liked and I fully expect it to break. In anticipation, I have ordered a right angle drive and new cable from Speedy Cables. That should ensure that in never breaks!!

Finally, I'd just like to say what good service I received from all at BGH especially Chris who just about built my new box in front of my eyes. A really professional firm and very good to do business with.

I bought a BGH box and was very pleased with it.

The first one they supplied had an oil leak (problem with the casket) but they posted another one out for me to do a swap and then picked the faulty one up after.

Good customer service for a change, although it was a pain doing two gearbox changes back to back!!

what ratio's did you get ?

I was going to get there heavy duty E2 + a 0.87 5th (long 1st, HD bearings)

but then I got a s/h E8 that had been built in november and never been used
(close ratio, based on 2.8 box, HD bearings + 3rd/4th syncro)

of course it means I'll never have a standard box in the car - so I won't know how much better it is !

mcerd1

I've got the E2HD with the long first gear. In fact first is a bit shorter than the Rocket which makes it more practical for general road driving, particularly hill starts. The Rocket gave 61mph in first as against 50mph for the E2 so quite a big difference.

Pricewise, I paid their list price which I think is very good value for a really good box.

glad to hear your happy - it gives me more confidence that mine will be the right choice

mine is a much higher spec than I need just now and would have cost an arm and a leg new, thankfuly I only paid about 3/4 list price for my s/h box (it still cost a little more than yours )

It always confuses me when comparing std and modified boxes how you suss out what the improvements should be. The changes in gear ratios often seem so slight. I guess its the improvement in torque that makes small changes more dramatic on the road.

Sorry for hijack - can anyone explain in laymans terms? Maybe comparing the std common box ratios to the E2.

Done about 50 miles on my BGH high first box. Initially had problems if I gave the engine full revs in first gear I wasn't able to get into neutral or 2nd gear but this evening everything was fine. Put the problem down to everything in the box being tight , now it has covered a few miles its fine. Chris was very helpful, even going in on a saturday so I could collect box. Car is much better off the line and not having to change gear after about 20 feet .Well pleased and wouldn't hesitate to recommend BGH.

I've had mine for a couple of years and was putting up to 190 lbs ft through it for the last 6-8 months. No problems as yet but originally I went with one as I believe the oiling is revised to help with high RPM. In NA form my 4AGE was regularly over 8000RPM.
