Does the heater work when its overheating? if not it may be the water pump impeller faulty. Get it tested for head gasket failure? Possible thermostat failure ? blocked rad ?

Change the timing belt and tensioner while your at it . As said a lot of later VW water pump impellers are made of plastic and come loose on the shaft.

had new belt and put only 20k two year ago

The guy that services my taxi changes the water pump when he does the cam belt. Says they are a common problem. From memory I think the kit was about £40. False economy not to do it whilst cam belt is off.

Ben.

For the price of a belt it's simply not worth re-using one unless it's literally a few miles old.
