Crank Trigger wheel & TPS fitting
thepest - 7/5/08 at 06:42 PM

Hey Guys, further to this thread LINKY
I bought myself the EDIS system, I will of course be fitting the trigger wheel to my crank pulley. Does this mean it has to be welded to the pulley or would it be sufficient if it could hold by just tightening the crank bolt? I have come up with a few ideas as to how to fit the VR sensor but if anyone has any other successful ways of making the VR sensor bracket, please post.

Also I need to come up with how to fit the TPS to weber carbs, to where do you normally attach the bracket to? there aren't any holes for it in the weber carb.

I drilled the pulley and trigger wheel myself and fitted 3 bolts to ensure it couldnt slip. I did have a few degrees of adjustment on the bracket to ensure i could properly set the timing.

I guess the risk of not securing it is that you could totally lose all timing if it slips.

For the TPS fitting have a look a David Jenkins post a few weeks ago , he has mounted it to the linkage . When I fitted my toothed wheel I turned up a spacer to locate inside the pulley against the crank with a spigot to locate toothed wheel . I drilled the toothed wheel , mounted the sensor , timed crank and toothed wheel and when I was satisfied everything was correctly positioned I drilled into the spacer and fitted a roll pin . I also replaced the washer on the crank pulley bolt with a larger diameter item . No photos I'm afraid.HTH

Wrong sort of carbs, I think. Mine's for a DGV, his are DCOE (maybe).

I`ve got one of those kits in the bottom of my tool box................just missing the TPS

Not sure what engine you got mate, but this is how I did mine on a pinto, I'll try and find a better picture for you.

I welded a trigger wheel from a Sierra onto a steel crossflow pulley. The VR sensor I made a bracket which goes across the front timing cover, secured by two of the cover's bolts. I used a bit of steel angle for this.

The I made a bracket and spindle adaptor up as on the following website:

http://www.cate1.co.uk/megajolt/installation.php

I used a TPS from a Mk3 Fiesta (make sure it rotates in the correct direction). I made sure that there was a little preload on the TPS, so that the full throttle range is "sensed".

I am adding some photos to my archive, although they are not too detailed.

Theres some photos in my archive of a crossflow and trigger wheel installation. The TPS sensor looks like the ones fitted to some fiestas and escorts with single point injection, the bracket should be easy to make .

He's asking for both isn't he?

Both have been asked about.

The first part of my post refers to the VR sensor, the second part to the TPS.

It doesn't fit my DCOE's though, there is only one rather fragile mounting hole instead of the large lug with two holes that this kit is designed for. Perhaps I have some earlier carbs?

Many thanks everyone, yes they are Weber DCOE's I will try the roll pin to secure the trigger wheel as it seems a possible task by making a larger spacer washer and some creativity on the lathe.
As for the TPS, I did consider the one from fastroadcars but I was hoping for more of a locost option. Has anyone made a TPS bracket for the dcoe carbs?

Don't forget that quite a few people use the megajolt in 2D mode - the timing varies with the engine speed only, without MAP or TPS.

Although this isn't ideal, they seem to reckon it's still better than the old dizzy!

When I put TPS on my old Weber down-draft I probably spent an hour just looking at it for possible places to fit the pot. Might be worth doing the same with the DCOE...

My toothed wheel and sensor is almost identical to Richards.

For TPS - ive fitted bike carbs on Boggs manifold. They welded a bracket to manifold for me (my request, not their suggestion). This si not successful. Carbs move independantly of manifold. You really need the bracket on the carbs themselves. As a resuly of this i havent sussed out the TPS yet and run 2D mode. It is a better than old dizzy (which was brand new electronic set up and pretty good in itself). Once i get TPS sorted it will be better still.

I sat in the OMEX presentation and they were saying why you need to feed a load signal into the ECU for better running so ill probs look into this more soon.

wonderfulweasel - 8/5/08 at 05:57 PM

Making a bracket for my 45 DCOE was definitely a locost option. I used a bit of steel angle and made up a spindle adaptor, so only actually paid for the TPS itself.

The website I gave a link to in my first post is exactly how I did it and is a very good guide, even giving thread sizes and clear pictures.
