I think the layshaft bearings are dead in my Mx5 gearbox - there is A LOT of noise all the time , which allmost go`s when the clutch is depressed ,
and becomes a high-pitch rattle when shutting the throttle at any kind of speed , and when changing into 5th . Knock it out of gear at speed and it
will make your ears bleed
I`m wondering.......as a short term fix , can I just change the front bearing without stripping the gearbox right down ? The front `cover` / oil seal
carrier comes off to reveal both front bearings.......
If your going to be taking the engine out to replace the front bearing you are half way there.....take the entire darn thing out and get it looked at
before it cracks a cog through the casing!
(Sure its not the diff?)

Fairly sure its not the diff - it sound very different in fourth , which is direct/1-1 on this box .
I was going to pull the whole box out , I just dont fancy stripping the whole thing for a bearing.......
Point of note....are you sure it's not the flywheel / clutch??

i had a quick look on ebay, boxes can be had for 75 quid.
is it worth buying a replacement box, fitting it and then rebuilding the other one at your leisure?
