My donor car engine, a XR4i with a 2.8 MFI, has decided not to start just before I begin to strip it out. I would prefer that I know it is running
o.k. before I take it to bits as this wil help me when (and if!) I get it installed.
The problem is that it fires up first time then stops immediately, it will not fire at all then. If I wait for a couple of minutes, it will fire up
first time again and then stop.
Is there anything quick and simple to look at first, or do I need to go right through the whole system stage by stage?
Thanks,
RPS
my amateur opinion would say fuel supply, then again i dont know much on engines! just sounds like that, waiting for it to trickle thru...
Agreed, it must be fuel, but the fuel must be getting through to the distributor or it would not fire initially. I was thinking it might be something
to do with the air flow sensor.

I have an electronic V6 so i dont know how it compares.
BUT on my car there is a lekky fuel pump that primes the systme for 2 secs before starting, then it stops. once the engine fires, it then restarts
pumping - wonder if your fuel doesnt pump after it starts.......
checking for a blocked filter might also be a good idea.
I was told, with a jag V12 I had, to temporarily put a pressure gauge in a 't' to the fuel rail. this allowed the system to be checked for
proper fuel flow. if its starving, the pressure (often around 35psi) will fall.

PS - anything MFI is usually crap - the doors will sag, the drawer botoms fall out, and the backs drop off.

sounds like the pump relay, should be a purpley thing poss in fuse box
We couldn't find the relay. We just hot wired the pump to a 12v power supply and turned it on manually to get our MFI V6 running. Had to have the
car plugged in on a long extension cable to manouver it around the drive
sounds what I was saying in a nutshell!
