ZX9R questions

Having finaly got my ZX9R engine to run I have a few questions...

Should you be able to hear the engine top end clicking away at idle?

And

There is a small bore pipe that comes from the top of the water pump assembly and goes to each of the carbs before coming out the other side in quite a long rubber hose... Where is the loose end supposed to go? At the moment I just have it blanked off which doesnt seem right!

That pipe that comes from the top of the water pump is the carb coolant pipe. I blanked mine off at the pump as have a lot of others. Its hot enough under the bonnet that carb icing rarely occurs. The ticking noise. Mine used to do it slightly and I tracked it down to that gas re circulation valve that sits in between the two pipes coming off the cam cover and has a 3rd pipe going into the airbox. I took that off too and it sounds okay now. If you want me to check the haynes manual for where that carb pipe goes let me know just in case you want to keep it.

I had assumed it was something to do with carb icing.....I will just leave it blanked off for now I think. (Having said that, if you have the manual to hand, where is it "supposed" to go?)

I still have all the gas recirculation pipework on top of the engine, but obviously no airbox....

What exactly did you remove from the top of the engine?....Do you have any pics of the top of your engine showing what you have done with the pipes?

Let me go and look. The books in the garage but the neighbours' out so I might be caught up

Righto mate first is the valve replacement

Gas Recirc Valve Replaced
Gas Recirc Valve Replaced

And the coolant pipes marked in red. They loop from each carb and meet on the right at a 3 way connection which runs to a kinda filter then should go straight to the pump (red dotted)

Thats awesome, thanks

Will go give that a try and see if makes the engine a bit....quieter...

It was the valve that was ticking on mine. There seems to be a spring loaded do hickey that chatters.

Removed the recirculation garbage as you suggested and the noise got a bit quieter...

It suddenly dawned on me that I had not done up the bolts on the headers properly.....so that wasnt helping either!

Are there supposed to be gaskets between the head and headers?....Even with the pipes done up tight it still blows a bit where the heads meet the pipes....l

Yeah there's generally some kind of gaskets. There's copper type ones or like an asbestos/foil type things.
