Zetec clutch mod
madteg - 23/6/08 at 09:17 PM

Have redrilled flywheel to fit 2.0l pinto clutch and thrust bearing, because zetec clutch was slipping. Very easy mod but what a differance, clutch is alot stronger now.

just how 'easy' was this mod?

For some reason i'd worry drilling a flywheel in case i weaken it / add a stress raiser or just do something plain silly without realising.

My Dunnell one had this done as standard....

How did you center it ?

Good - nice to know it works. My £10 replacement mondeo clutch is going ok at the moment, but I have a feeling it won't last long.

Redrilling the flywheel will be next on the agenda for me - probably next time I have the engine out. I'm planning on setting it in the lathe, very lightly scribing a circle of the Pinto clutch PCD, placing the pinto clutch on the scribed circle to know that it is centred and then marking / drilling the holes.

Anyone got any better ideas on how to do it? (preferably using the lathe - it's my new favourite toy!)

All I have to do now is stop myself from lightening it while it's on the lathe - tempting but not worth it! There are a few videos of DIY lightened flywheels on Youtube catastrophically exploding that put me off a bit....

Centred it on lathe by scribing a line and placing clutch on it on centre mark holes centre dot ,drill with depth gauge then tap replace dowles, job done...

i got mine redrilled professionally at teesside motor factors in cleveland - they have a chap who does one off machining for them - he made a mandrel for the centering then removed the old alignment pins - redrilled and moved the clutch cover round slightly to miss old holes - by getting it done properly you eliminate vibration from not being bang on center which could have catastrophic effects.. cost £80 well worth it
