ZZR1100 - what's it worth?
Sparky - 8/7/02 at 06:49 PM

I've just been offered a written off '91 ZZR1100, frame damaged only.

Just the one question then (from a newbie biker!) How much is it worth?

Apparently it's derestricted, with uprated carb pack. 162-ish bhp instead of 147.

What say you?

I know virtually nothing about bike engines but I do know that they are small and produce lots of power. This means that they are highly stressed, and wear is bound to be a factor. With this engine being a.11 years old and b.uprated, the omens are not good.

From the little I know, I've had a few bikes but am certainly no expert, low mileage, known history, newer motor is better. I've just bought a totally standard ZX9R, 3 yrs old, 8k miles, new C2 model. I think the 138bhp will be plenty, if not I'll go the Ison Nutter route and fit NOS.

But if it's cheap enough then maybe??

Now all we need is the opinion of somebody who really knows what they are talking about....

Thanks Guys.

I know very little about bikes either. The guy had it a month after buying it and was involved in a low speed smash, he's got his insurance money and gets to keep the bike - he's asking about £350.

Sound about right? Mr Ison?

I'll see if I can find out what the mileage is, but then I'll only worry that it was racked up at a quarter of a mile at a time!

Well i would tend to go the interestedparty route, bit dated, worth more to the biker who's blown is motor than the guy puttin one in a car, price dunno ? but you are relying on 11 years of someones maintenece been up to sratch....is he talking silly money ? how much ? a decent Blade would knock you back £800 to 1k..... i would not want to be paying any where near half that,
how does that compare ?

ah, we was postin at same time, can you hear it run, if so and you aint buying, i am. Doe's that answer your question ?
its gonna be yours for £300 max init ? grab it...

All I needed to know...

Sparky,

I had a 1990 ZZR1100 (in about 1991).

Standard is 125 bhp - it was a "gentlemans agreement" between the big manufacturers - they were all sh*tting themselves about possible legislation restricting bike bhp (Germany 100bhp - pointless).

The carb mod involved taking the carb tops of a ZXR750 - all it did was increase the amount of travel on the carb slides. Increased power to 147bhp.

As for reliability - so long as it's been serviced, should go on forever (do the usual though - hear it, visually inspect, history etc etc - it's your money:-) ).

Friend used to have 1987 GSXR1100 Suzuki (that he bought new) and had over 140,000 miles on it. Still went like the proverbial)

Hope this of some help

ATB

I should point out first that I’m not an expert on bike engines but I’m doing a fair bit of research at the moment as I intend to build a BEC. I looked at a ZZR1100 myself as one of my best mates dad owns a VERY large Kawasaki dealership. His verdict was that engine was fantastic but he knows a lot of customers that have used the engine but have had trouble with the gearbox. It would seem that it’s fine for a bike but it doesn’t cope too well with the extra stresses of being in a car.

However, this is all second hand info, I couldn’t say one way or another. I am assured that the engine is bullet proof so the age/mileage shouldn’t be a problem in that respect.

Hope this is of some use…

Cheers,

Max
