UPVC Coolant Pipes
thebutler - 14/12/03 at 06:18 PM

Hi,

Does anybody know if it's OK use UPVC piping in the coolant circuit. For example to join two pieces of rubber hose togther?

By UVPC I mean the stuff you get in places like B&Q for plumbing.

Any advice appreciated.

Steve

seen it used, but i havent risked it myself, the copper fittings from plumb center do a good job, i used one with a smaller dia "T" to run a line to the expansion bottle from my btm hose, still going strong.

Not sure whether it is suitable or not, (tend to think it would soften to much), but the waste pipes you buy in B&Q are probably made from ABS. Marley make waste pipe in both ABS and uPVC, uPVC being suitable for outside use, but ABS must be protected from sunlight.

I think some light reading on Hicosts accident re hot water, would put anyone off using any thing but the proper items
My cooling system is made up with a multitude of Items, and all of them are/were designed for a car's hot water !!!

FYI, Hicosts car has been built to a very high standard, and James is not someone who "cuts corners", yet his accident nearly cost him his life, I believe that a metal water pipe fractured and filled the cockpit with steam/hot water

The B&Q plastic tube may well be ok for hot water, but is it designed for hot water under pressure ????

dint think of that, very valid points.

Thanks for the advice. I suppoese it doesn't do to cut corners.

The next obivous queston is where I can get some suitable hose joiners (32mm OD) at a reasonable price. Demon tweeks do them for £8 each!

Cheers,

Steve

was it northy who posted a link a while ago for a place that had bucket fulls of different joiners and tees?

Northy - 15/12/03 at 06:10 PM

Yeap, but all plastic

I got some 32mm ones from Demon Peads

i thought a piccy showed that hicosts accident was a hose that blew off its fitting......

You could.. join the hoses with copper pipe and put beads on either end like below...

Try visiting the following site - they are great lads and prices are extremely reasonable.

28mm Yorkshire fittings available from plumbing suppliers with the solder ring fitting have a lip for the jubilee clip to grip behind and are reasonably priced. I've used them to extend my bottom hose.

yours, Pete.

Thanks for all the reply's chaps.

Having read back over what happened to Hicost, I've decided to go with the safest(?) route and order some joiners from DT - expensive, but at least they'll look nice...

Just in caseyou haven't ordered yet, have you tried Merlin Motorsport? They do a wide range of ally hose joiners in different diameters and lengths which I THINK are cheaper than Demon Tweeks.

I think they're on the web, not sure of the address tho'... Anyone?

Steve.

any thoughts on the vulcoflex hoses?

thebutler - 16/12/03 at 01:06 PM

I did try Merlin, but they were more expensive (10p) Also they didn't have a picture, and it's nice to see what you're getting!
