A project has come up which requires a chassis to be made to accommodate the major components from a Jaguar XJ40, which is the model of XJ6 which ran
from D to M registration. It features the AJ6 24V engine in 3.2, 3.6 and 4.0 versions
If anyone happened to have one of these cars parked on their drive I would consider it a great favour if they would measure the engine and give me an
approximate length for the engine compartment required, ie from the firewall to the front transverse chassis tube. Ignore the engine driven fan if it
has one, but anything that does have to stay on the engine obviously needs to be allowed for.
Thanks in anticipation

The engine itself is 32" long.
I have built my chassis with about 40" for the engine.
Good luck finding a manual box if you dont already have one
ETA - 2.9 and 3.6 ran from 86 - 89 iirc and 3.2 and 4.0 ran from 90 - 94

Thanks for the info.
I'm not too bothered about the manual box (although there are several 3.2's and a couple of 4.0's with manual boxes on Autotrader at
the moment) because I actually like automatics.
Never-the-less, I must consider my customers' wishes, and will start looking in earnest for a manual donor soon (if the project goes ahead, which
seems likely)
I have always been of the belief that one should find the best donor possible, and that buying scrapyard refugees is often false economy, unless one
is planning to replace most of the wearing parts anyway (which I am not!)

One thing i will add is that my 3.2 auto had dreadfull rear end grip in the wet until i canged to wider tyres so traction control maybe a good idea
for a car that will probably weigh half what my jag weighs
whatever you do DO NOT get a 2.9 engine tho - they are flat as a fart.. 3.2 always seemed the best value fuel / power wise - they introduced a *sport*
button - that was interesting...
second that, the 3.2 was never much slower than the 4.0 (had a LOT of these over the years! ) and quite a bit more economical for some reason
