Having a few problems getting my dellortos set up on my zetec, I am considering going all modern and fitting EFI. Seems to be at least as powerful,
but also smoother and more economical, a win/win situation
Any idea on costs if I were to do this a bit DIY/locost. Megasquirt seems to be popular, and I was considering chopping my inlet to fit bike throttle
bodies, saving some costs. But what about totals, and level of difficulty?? Vague I know....
i went from an r1 carb to r1 throttle body set up and as you can see i have only just got it running, the megasquirt was £300, R1 throttle bodies were
£100, cost of wiring and fuses and connectors about £50 + other little bits and bobs, sensors etc £40
so cost me about £500. but remember, i already have the stainless manifold and pipercross filter from my r1 carbs so i would add on another £250 for
tham. just some ball part figures for you,.
if you dont know a lot about Megasquirt i'd start reading!
Have you tried getting the dellortos set up on a rolling road? If you can find someone who knows what they are doing they should be able to get it
running properly.
Only do the efi conversion if you really need to or if you can afford an emeral unit and to get it set up by them on their rolling road in Norfolk
(IMHO)

Worth trawling through some searches as such a conversion has been talked about and done many times.
my take is that well set up carbs are comparable to EFI (some pros and cons)but EFi seems to score on smoothness and possibly bit better
efficiency.
megasquirt is locost DIY route but if you rely on tuning shop to set up your conversion you may find yourself restricted which is where well known
aftermarket ECU systems score higher. However if you dont mind the development and self learning then many people seem to have found megasquirt
rewarding.
As said above getting the carbs pro tuned might be a cheaper solution in the short term if they are in good condition.
One down side of carbs (although I continue to reccommend them if you get them set up properly) is the bore wash that occurs with the extra petrol
needed for starting the engine (especially in winter) tends to wash any lubricalt from the cylinders and increases wear.
The accurate fuelling that you get with factory ecu's is one reason why modern engines last so much longer than older ones

I'm getting it done too. It will prob work out the same after you have spent money on jets and accessories for your carbs, apparently it worked out cheaper for me to use EFI, after all the bits I had to buy to get my carbs running properly.
go megasquirt and never look back
go on ebay if you are not up for fabricating your own inlet adaptor however if you dont mind a bit of welding then use k3-7 gsxr 750 or 1000 throttle
bodies a bit of silicone hose some pipe and some 5mm plate ali stainless or steel the last two you can mig
the gsxr injectors will be fine even for a tuned 2 l zetec as long as there s no turbo in question the throttle pot will work with megasquirt to
there is a company in the uk www.diyautotune.co.uk who do a ms kit for £145 then all you need is the msns extra card and the old edis bits to go back
on your engine even if you dont fancy diy the ecu would be 300 odd
think thats extraefi.com either way by tha time you have sold your ecy which is running the ignition the carbs and the manifold you willl have payed
for a system you can remap for free when you feel like it base maps you can get from megasquirtmaps.co.uk get stuck give me a shout megasquirt cant be
beaten even by some of those £1500 omex and pectel systems
Well, did an autosolo today, and suffered chronic fuel surge in the carbs, lost a lot of time with the ar appearing "choked". And it
wasn't just me, weber and dellorto's alike seemed to be affected, guess its the speed and very tight corners.
SO have bought on fleabay a megasquirt c/w manifold and throttle bodies, all off a 1.8 zetec just like mine, so should have an accurate map to start
me off. Ideal.
Now just need to collect, fit and start. Also need a swirl pot and a high pressure pump, but that should be easy enough I hope.

go EFi.
there are much cheaper routes depending on what you want to get out of it...
If you want EFi to give better fuel , instant starting, better response etc, then the standard ford EFi is very cheap.
On all the cars i have built, i have used the donors EFi system with great effect. ok its not mappable but its a good starting point.
i will be upgrading to throttle boddies at some point, but for SVA, ill be sticking with the stock ford efi.
