Clearance
Matysiak - 28/7/08 at 10:54 AM

I installed the crossflow engine and gearbox in my Birkin copy this weekend. However i noticed that the clearance between the gearbox and the side panels of the transmission tunnel is only around 5mm. Is this enough clearance or should i be getting a heavy hammer out?

you'll need around twice that depending on how hard the rubber mounts are

I have less in a couple of places. It's never been a problem in 7000 miles.

Ah but at 8000miles it will sound like someone has take a pneumatic drill to your car and the top doesn't count

suck it and see once you have the engine running, in gear brakes on clutch out, get some to see how much it moves

The gap is between the sides of the gearbox and two of the vertical tubes that make up the sides of the transmission tunnel. Never had so much as a clunk when accelerating hard or turning sharply.

I did mitigate the risk by using a Cortina engine mount for my gearbox mount - it was much stiffer.

I would also say that should be fine - you should get too much lateral movement at that point in the transmission...
