I just noticed, the crossflow (831 block) i have installed has a welsch plug blanking off the area where a breather pipe would normally be connected to the block. I don't have any other "breather" arrangement besides the venting from the standard plastic cap on the tappet cover. Will this be enough?
I don't think so, if it was me I'd connect a hose to that hole, have other end in of the hose a bottle to catch any sludge and have another
pipe coming from the bottle to the airfilter to burn the fumes. Lots of petrol and water vapour is in the sump area plus all the blow by from the
pistons, you want to get rid of that and it will make the oil last longer.

have got a xflow crank breather adaptor sat on my desk - £5 to you sir.
You have to have the flame trap thing (breather)
I painted mine, ready to refit, but have lost it.
Soon i will be looking in all the sheds and garage for it. At least dad gets his Sheds tidied, but then he wont be able to find anything!
