Do you always need one of these?

I think so. As the engine sucks the fuel out of the tank you have to replace the missing volume with something otherwise you get a bit of a vacuum created. Thats the theory anyway. Dunno if it's any different in practice mind. Depends if your fuel cap is 100% air tight or not I suppose.

The one way valve stops the fuel escaping in case you flip the car over but I expect leaking fuel would be the least of your worries then.....

Some advice:
Get a two way valve. It will still shut off the fuel if inverted.
Tanks need to breathe both ways.
Your tank will pressurize in the summer and if you have a return pipe it could explode. I kid you not.
When you use only a one way valve, air is drawn in to replace the fuel that is drawn out, but when some of that fuel is returned to the tank, it is not able to push the air back out.
I destroyed a bosch inj pump that way too..................

I cut an old inner tube up, this gave me a schreider valve and brass insert that it screws into. This is a good fit for some 8mm fuel pipe as its a self contained unit.

So I could vent out as above I nipped the spring out the valve so it would not be held closed.

One my car I used one from a Audi 80. It's cheap and reliable. On the audi it's on the rearbulkhead in the trunk, atached with some rivets. Up to the scrappy
