Identifying the engine/gearbox
Daddylonglegs - 11/8/08 at 01:15 PM

Does anyone out there know how I can find out the details of my engine and gearbox from their identity numbers?

They are from a Sierra 1.6 5-speed. I'm guessing the 'box is a type 9 (or 'N) and the engine I think is a straight forward OHC. The car was built in '87.

Cheers,
JB

If it's an 87, then it'll probably be a 165 block and type 9 box - there should be a 165 stamped on teh block somewhere.

Look at Burton Power, there's a guide there on how to id / date Ford engines..

PS - whereabouts in Wilts are you?

if reverse is next to 1st then its a type 9, if its bellow 5th (i.e. next to 4th with a ring you pull up) then its an MT75

if your still not sure post some pics on here and you'll soon get an answer

i'd agree, however 165 is embossed on the block, not stamped.

Thanks for that guys. The block does indeed have 165 embossed on it. I'll pop off to the Burton site to have a little look.

Vince, I am near Brinkworth.
