I just got some thin sheet (about 1.2mm/1.6) from B&Q...

Steve,
i got the steel for my tank from
metal supermarket at team valley.
they cut it to size and charged half the b&q price.and he gave me the offcuts.

Yeah.... B&Q are expensive (but convenient)
1.5 or 2mm is about right, thicker could be better in case you ground the sump, but would be harder to weld to the original sump material, which is
only about 1mm max.
I would ask a local fabrication company for an offcut.
Ive just done a black top sump for my car, the hardest part is shortening the pick up pipe as it needs to be cut right back and joined close to the
back of the pickup filter.
Paul.
i used 1mm steel from b&q, aa it was late and they were open. then tacked it in place and got it welded.

I used 16 gauge steel (~1.6mm thick) which matches up pretty well with the original xflow sump.
When i modded my pinto sump i used 3mm for the base and (iirc) 1.2mm for the sides. I also angled the front end up a bit to act as a skid plate. Ive lightly contacted it on a blat before with no ill effects. Whilst heavy ish it does seem very durable.
