When buying a used engine
EasyJimbo - 29/8/08 at 07:06 AM

Hi Guys
When looking at used engines i.e. zetec 2lt what should I be making sure I have included or what is needed paperwork wise. Looking at an engine this weekend (2lt zetec with type 9 gearbox), just want to make sure I know what i should be getting.
thanks
J

For paperwork make sure you get an addressed, signed and witnessed receipt, or if it is a business, a proper invoice.
Both of these should state the condition of the engine and again if it is a company, they should be able to give you at least a startup warranty on it

Cheers

Alex

Are the engine and box being taken out of a car?? Private sale or breakers yard??

Anyway - proof of ownership hopefully
If the engine is a runner then hopefully get to hear it running, otherwise i'd take a socket set and ensure it turns over.
Check that the engine number is intact and matches any paperwork.
Check the block for broken bolts / stripped threads (engine mounting points, inlet mounts, exhaust studs etc)
Try the gearbox for operation between the gears.
GET A RECEIPT

Hopefully thats a start
