I've got one of those Maplin sound meters sat here on my desk. (I needed one for work, honest).

If you cover the cost of registered post there and back you can borrow it for a week or so.

It all depends what meter they are using at the track. Note Maplin's answer to a question - it is not and cannot be calibrated- so really the measurement is meaningless.

Also note it claims to measure up to 130 dB. This must be about 60 times the sound level of a 747 taking off 100 yards away

The Maplin could give you a relative measurement. You would have to take a measurement on a car that you know had passed at that particular track and then compare that reading with your own car.

Yes!!! That's what's annoying about places like Maplins selling "noise meters". Without calibration a "noise meter" is almost useless. Good for comparative measurements but for "will this be okay for a track day" definite measurements it's no good. That's what proper dB meters cost £££££££££££.

But a cheap noise meter. Go to a track day at the circuit you want pass at. Compare your readings to the circuits measurements on their kit. Irrelevant if their kit is calibrated you just want the reading on yours compared to their kit which is deemed acceptable!

Maybe not convenient if the circuit is several hours away! As I'm close to Castle Combe I've taken my car over on test or track days and asked for a sound reading before booking an event. It's in their interest to have cars pass the noise requirements otherwise they can potentially lose their license from complaints.

Just to spring to the defence of Maplins....
I bought a meter from them and tested it against a car that had just passed SVA at Norwich.
It was spot on.

It 's also capable of calibration although I have never needed to.
