Hi Folks.
I've finally got round to trying to install a Zetec as replacement for the old Xflow.
The engine came as "everything fitted, ready to run". It comes with a Weber Alpha ignition system.
Before I fit the flywheel and clutch, I just want to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.
I've included some photos. I'm guessing that the senser which nearly touches the flywheel is the engine speed sensor????
Should there be a corresponding part on the flywheel?

Not daft questions at all...

The large bored holes form the pattern for the sensor to read as the flywheel spins... See the holes that are joined together? That is the registration that the ECU uses to know the crank has performed one revolution in case of pickup errors. The holes are at 10 degree intervals around the flywheel.

The sensor is the crank position sensor so does indeed measure engine speed. It reads off the 36 "holes" drilled into the flywheel there (more accurately it measures the metal between the holes and then registers the "gap" as Seabass says when it gets to that bit.

What you might want to check is that you have the spigot bearing fitted into the end of the crankshaft that supports the gearbox input shaft. Ford should have these, as will Burton Power etc

I found the cheapest place for the spigot bearings was a shop on ebay although I forget the name...

Yes don't forget the spigot bearing, what about the intermediate plate which fits between the engine and box, unless you have a split plate it needs to go in before the flywheel.

The flywheel only fits in one position, the holes are a little off concentric so the blank on the back is always at the correct crank angle.

Its a VR sensor and measures crank postion for correct ignition timing, not engine speed as such but position.

And as said you need a spigot bearing installing before you fit the clutch. My focus ST engine has a spigot bearing in it as standard so they should still be available from Ford.

Don't spose anyone has a PDF of the Alpha performance ignition kit K970717 instructions (version 8: April 2003), that I could borrow.

Yep the flywheel is the rustiest one I've ever used but a bit of wire brushing will sort that out - it's not as rusty on the other side

that flywheel looks heavy - can it be lightened at all? makes for better throttle response if it can

My Alpha manual might be just what you need.. I think i have it on pdf- i'll check this evening.

Sorry mate my fitting instructions are for kit K99011 i'm afraid, but if you go to webcon forum and put upa post, someone will help- thats where i got my instructions from :-)
