Any deisel engine specialists/guru's on here...?

I have a Sprinter van 311 cdi 2001 which died on me whilst the engine was idling. The engine was warm and had been in use for a couple of hours of
driving before it stalled. Its been a pain in the arse to start recently with quite a bit of cranking required to get it to go.
My thoughts (I am far from an expert with diesels) is fuel pump(s) or injector(s)
Anyone else want to have a go at diagnosing the fault? Anyone able to give me a maximum and minimum repair bill cost estimate so I know how skint I
will be at Christmas.
Can anyone recommend a diesel specialist in North Bedfordshire?
I know your all going to say it needs hooking up on the diagnostics to tell the fault but I hoped you may have opinions/experience which can help me
out!

its probably the fuel pressure reg O ring and plastic spacer that has split VERY VERY common and about a 5er for bits, just need to remove the inlet
to access the reg at the rear of the fuel rail.
Takes less than an hour to do just need a small rachet and some E torx bits
A pint for the gent and a white wine/fruit based drink for the lady. Those are the rules

Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like you have some experience of this?
Have you a link to anything on the web which can give me some more detail on how do this job? Have you a part(s) number so I can order the
necessary.

I'm with bigrich on the diagnosis, although i did once have a cam sensor go, which gave identical symptoms.
If you tow start it, it should run ok, just don't switch it off.
Injectors are also prone to go on the 311, and are silly money.

we just order the bits from Merc who always have them in stock (wonder why)
I have done quite a few and its a fairly easy jobwith just a couple of bolts to undo by feel at the back of the inlet manifold

A thing I've seen happen on a Vito with a common-rail diesel is the O ring on top of the fuel filter leaking air into the system, it gave
similar symptoms that you have. Although the Sprinter is a different animal the fuel system may well be similar.
A smear of grease on the O ring had it right.
A mate who deals in & maintains vans said he only uses genuine Merc filters now because of it.

I'm a bit of a numpty with CDi engines at the moment. Is there the equivalent of a workshop manual available for this engine?
On-line and free would be even better than one I have to buy but a link to anything would be very appreciated!
