First start...not yet, need advice

Evening, just tried to start it for 1st time, but did not fire up. What should I try next?

1.8 Zetec (not been run for ~20 months)
ZZR Carbs, from Boggs, so should be set up to run OK.
EDIS 4
Megajolt (not plugged in yet, trying to start it on the EDIS limp home first as per MJLJ installation instructions)

This is what I did:
Filled with oil, turned engine over with plugs out, got 45psi oil pressure OK.
Filled coolant OK.
Checked for sparks with all 4 plugs out, OK, re-fit plugs/leads.
1 gallon of fresh petrol into tank, ran pump, pertol comes out of hose at carb end OK. Connect hose to carbs, ran pump to fill carbs till pump stopped.
Choke out.
Turn over...... very excited, video running........... but nothing, just a few pops came out the the carb intakes and a little smoke from the exhaust ports.

I have double checked the EDIS wiring and everything I can think of. The battery seems only 1/2 charged and struggled to turn engine over by the end of my attempts, it's getting a proper charge overnight. There is fuel still left in tank.

Any suggestions what else to try??????

So close now...........just need some help from you guys.

Full battery and it'll be fine... I got the 3 wires to the coil pack wrong so the firing order was wrong, temp swapped the ht leads on the spark plugs and it fired straight up.

Cheers

Rich

When i first set mine up i got the 2 coil trigger wires the wrong way round and had the same issue as you.

Charge the battery up and swap the wires and see how you go. You shouldnt need much choke either itl flud easy if the ign advance aint right to get it going.

firing order would be my first choice.
swap some plug leads around and see what happens.
swap 1&4 for 2&3 (i think?)

Id go for the firing order I relied on someone elses loom anf the wires to the coil were wrong so got a brilliant spark but at the wrong time, make sure you try with a fresh battery to start with before you change anything. if that fails change the wires to the coil pack around, oh and one last ppoint dont do as I did and get so excited when it fires that you forget how hot the exhaust it lef a lovely burn on my shin.

Same here Keith. The trigger wires on my coil were the wrong way round as well.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Had exactly the same problem, and with almost everyone else on here it was the coil leads the wrong way around.

Changed them over, and it fired straight away.

Battery is now charged, so will give it another go tonight with a little choke. Then try swaping over the coil wires if it does not work.

Thanks for replies! I will certianly let you know once it fire up.

It's likely to be ignition. If you suspect fuel try some easi-start down the trumpets... At least it'll rule that out. But mixed up cables is the most likely cause IMHO....

I got the leads wrong too when swapped over to megajolt. Easy to do.
