v8 exhausts

right im thinking about exhausts. I have the manifolds that come off the engine and really fancy motorbike tail pipes (r1 or the likes) but dont know what the regulations are etc. It was a rover sd1 that the engine came out of, so it wont have had cat converters on so how do i prove the age of the motor for that?? and am i required to pass any emissions tests or noise tests with it in the sva/iva?? thanks. also any ideas on bore of pipes etc?

current sva noise test is 101 Db at 3/4 of max power revs. IVA limit will be 99Db at same rev level

If the engine is before july95 then no cat required, you will have to meet either 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC or
4.5% CO and 1200ppm HC dependant on how old the engine is( sorry cant remember the cut off dates)

thanks. if the engine is not tuned etc that should be fine for the emissions. its just the noide. if i have straight pipes to motorbike silencers will it be too loud do we think?? also would the bike silencers be too restrictive with their smaller bores?? Ive also looked at the silencers in the link below and like them a lot. would they be suitable?? thanks.

2" straight through will be fine, as its an SD1 you are running 2 x 1.75 litre engines.

A standard r1 can would kill the engine.

Have you injection or carbs, if carbs you will need to solder up the poppet valves on the the butterflies to get a decent idle.

its running on carbs. So if i run 2" pipe straight off the manifolds to one of them exhaust silencers on either side that will be fine for noise and for performance?? im liking the sound/look of them!!

One each side should be fine.

As Mark says, you're running the equiv of 2x 1.75 litre engines with a max rpm of 5500.

The R1 is 1000cc (ish) but revs to about 12000. The Rover will flow 9.6m litre/min per side, whereas the R1 cans will flow 12m. Figs not strictly accurate as 1) It only fires every other rev 2) Engine isn't that efficient 3) I drove to Paris then Lux and I'm knackered
