is this a bad idea?

my car is in for sva on thursday and its about a 50 mile trip! my engine is 2001 R1 on carbs. for emmisions to be adequate im told it is running very lean which is causing it to run very warm! would it be a bad idea to drive it there as am struggling to find a trailor and tow car?

Buy a solid bar and tow it some of the way??

50 miles shouldnt be too bad if you take it easy.

Can you not swap the jets over and swap them back when you get there?? They are the same as those used in Weber carbs anyway so should be pretty easy to get a set of 140's or so.

I guess you could just drop the clip on the needles by a couple of positions to richen it up in the mid range - thats a 5 min job to put back when you get there. Simpler than swapping jets anyway

its a race engine and we have had a few probs getting emmisions down. dont really want to start messing with them now we have it right! it was getting so hot that it was almost starting to damage bodywork!

I wouldnt drive it far, lean mixture plus engine under load = much heat and high probability of damaging something, trailer it 99% the way there, the sva man will need it at operating temperature, but tickover is far safer.

If in doubt do the thing that is least likely to do damage. Ie try to source a trailer or a friendly mechanic with recovery equipment. You would be really kicking yourself if you damaged the engine.

Could it be solved/lessened by removing the thermostat and adding a rad fan overide switch?

What have you done to make it lean at 2500 RPM? I assume you've just turned the mixture screws down? If so, the mixture is probably right on the main jets. If that is the case, keep the revs up and the throttle open.

Or have you changed the mains to make it lean? If so, why? The mains only have influence when the throttle is fairly wide open. Emissions are tested when the throttle is almost closed.

Too lean will cause it to fail emissions, just as too rich will!
