DHLA 40's on 2l Pinto problem
I am trying to get the above setup running smoothly, but seem to have a problem with the front carb. The fuel isn't getting to the engine.
Therefore the engine wont tick over.
If I squirt fuel in through the ports at regular intervals, the engine will idle (albeit not smoothly).
I have stripped down the carb to make sure that there is nothing stopping the fuel getting to the carb. It looks fine.
I have got Des Hammills book "How to Tune Dellortos and Webers" and am following th instructions to do with setting them up, but still no
joy. It is almost as if the front carb is blowing back the fuel, not enough of a vacuum to suck the fuel in.
What I can't understand is the back carb is fine, but I have been doing the same to both of them.
A friend had suggested that the cylinder head was cracked causing the backdraft so I refitted the original Ford 2V Weber carb. It ran sweetly.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Rob

Clean the idle and main jets if that dosen't work check the float height and that the float valve isn't choked.

Is it possible to swap the carbs round ie put front carb on the back and vice versa ? Don't know if it's poss, just a thought to see if
it's a problem with individual carb or engine.

all jets are brand new, as the carbs were originally jetted for a 1.6l.
Should be easy enough to swap the carbs around though, just a matter of swapping the linkages over, I think!!
Thanks

Just because they are new don't assume they are clear, all it would need is bit swarf or other junk in the carb body.
If the jets are alright it sounds as though enough fuel isn't getting into the float chamber. --- take the lid off and compare the
levels.
The 40/45DCOE is really two carbs with common float chamber - the only other parts that are shared are the accelerator pump piston and the throttle
spindle..

dont know whether its any help but when i had mine set up i was told id got the boddies bolted too tightly on to the manifold as there is a rubber
washer /gasket in there to cut down on some of the vibration from the engine and that because mine were so tight i might encounter a problem with the
fuel effectively forming a foam and causing the float to ride the foam and therefore cutting the fuel supply to that carb.dont know whether this is
only applicable when driving or on tick over aswell?
just a thought dont know if its of any help

If the engine vibrates when it is ticking over then it will happen then as well. Maybe?
