Carb cleaning

Anybody got any tricks on how to clean up a carb body? Preferable some type of immersion as I'm a lazy git!

Do you mean cosmetic cleaning or for servicing the carb?

If servicing (and its serviceable) then get a 5 litre can of basic cellulose thinners (gunwash) and a service kit. Strip the carb down to its component parts, remove all the rubber and plastic bits and immerse the rest for 24hrs and scrub. If the moving steel parts are rusted up I'd get another carb.

If cosmetic then brasso and elbow grease perhaps? Cellulose thinners will get the filth off but not oxidation. There are some aggressive chemical cleaners for aluminium alloy (at the shows usually) but they seem to leave a dull grey finish.

The dishwasher trick is great, although i haven't used it for carbs, it should be ok as long as you rinse in thinners etc afterwards to remove any of the alkaline cleaner from the carb. The aggressive alloy cleaners are alkaline and not dissimilar to dishwasher powders/liquids etc.

To REALLY clean alloy castings etc (and cast Iron engine blocks etc) (but you have to be VERY careful not to remove to much base metal (which it will do!) I have used a strong solution of Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide, available from Wilko) in boiling/very hot water, and just immerse the parts and agitate a bit.

I wouldn't recommend this for the carbs though but the alloy fizzes away a treat and any grease, corrosion etc is eaten away very nicely, but it does leave a dull matt finish, and will need rinsing and protecting afterwards to prevent further corrosion of the alloy.

Oh yes, meant to add, if using caustic soda, if nothing else then wear GOGGLES!! Hot Caustic soda WILL potentially blind you if it gets in your eye!!
