1760cc X-Flow..Advice please!!

hey up,

ive just been offered a 1760 x flow in a MK2 cortina for £130.... which seams a good price.

any recommendations for any tests to do to check it over and what the bore size is if its 1760cc to check it is what he says!! chances are that i will rebuild it so im not too bothered about a bit of smoke so longs as its only rings and stem seals...!

also any idea of the possiable power assuming it has a modified cam (nothing too wild) with twin DCOE 40`s

cheers,

bob

cheers

1600 xflows are known for bore wear if revved.

1760 is a serious overbore. If its really that big it will most likely be an 'AX' block. These are very sought after so 160 quid is worth it. Then again, I'd assume he knows this and the engine is really knackered.

Spare parts (like a gasket set) will probably be very expensive as its a very specialist size. The 'normal' overbore size for a crossflow is 1700cc.

Hello,

x-flow 1760 is an 85mm bore and this is only the realm of some really good thick 711m blocks or the AX block as mentioned above - the only pistons for this are generally forged and are £130 each - ring sets for these are not cheap.

Head Gaskets for 85mm are about £50

If its had as much money spent on the rest of it as the pistons etc then a good 1760 would make 140+ on a 300 cam and 40's - any more power and you need 45's

The more normal cheap tune up for a 1600 crossflow is to fit +90 (82.5mm) 1300 pistons which takes the compression up to around 11.5:1 and increases the capacity to 1660 keep the revs below 7000 on a 711 block and you could see 125BHP on 40's with a 285 cam as long as the head is in a fast road trim and the exhaust is not restrictive.

An old trick of the hot rod boys is the flat top lotus style forged piston - nice and light - and then skim the block a 320 cam and very well ported head - upwards of 180BHP with steel internals at 8500-9000rpm but needs big big carbs and costs loads.
