Type 9 strip down
Anybody know where can get the info to do this? For free preferably

get a haynes manual for a sierra off ebay. most early haynes manuals have a stripdown and diagrams in. i think the v6 one i've got does, the
later haynes release doesn't have much info on the gearbox.

Doh! so does mine! I take it the type N is the same? Just a different input shaft length.

i took the lid off my gearbox. whilst i was admiring how it moved all the cogs about, something fell off! took at least half an hour to get it back
working again...

Type N in haynes is type 9 to everybody else!

(which means i'm probably wrong)
I can never remember which way round it is but I always believed......
type N (or 9) refers to the v6 gearbox
type 9 (or N) refers to the I4 gearbox.
Apart from the difference in the input shaft length I've been told their is a difference in the front of the box - an extra bearing or slightly
different machining or something. Although this was from a company trying to persuade me to give them lots of money to recondition a gearbox from
them.
In reality for us lot they are identical but i'm an argumentative git at times

the v6 box with longer input shaft also has a different ratio first gear..

Getting back to the plot (!) - there is a Haynes book specifically for gearboxes, and servicing the Type 9 is described in detail.
If it must be free, try your local library - that's where I saw it.

Does anyone have an exact title for it, my Haynes sierra manual isn`t a great lot of use re my type 9 box?

Don't know the name of that one but both my sierra haynes manuals have full details (V6 one and 4 cyl one) you just need an older haynes
manual.
Mike, your reconditoner was right about the v6 box, as well as a long input shaft and different 1st gear it has uprated layshaft bearings which were
too big to fit in the standard counterbores in the ends of the type 9 casing. The V6 'box used larger holes fitted with bolt-in bosses that the
bearings sit in. Even on a short-input shaft 'box it is sensible to uprate to the "V6 layshaft bearing assembly" as this is about
the weakest point on the 4 cyl cars 'box. Incidentally, your man is right on the casting too, the bellhousing has a bit machined away to clear
the boss that the layshaft bearing is mounted in as this ticks out of the front of the gearbox.
Lastly, if all else fails, I can photocopy the pages on the strip and reassembly of the Type 9 and post it if necessary. (or scan in and email I
suppose but it is a few pages!

If you ask really nicely (well ok, do a search on the web) you can find a russian site that has lots of the Sierra manual, including the gearbox
section.
