Exhaust wrap for cast manifolds - Any issues?
Hi,
Thinking of wrapping my Rover V8 exhaust manifolds with heat shielding wrap but just wanted to check that I'm not going to experience any issues
with cracking or anything? Obviously a very different construction compared to tubular headers, particularly as the material is much thicker in parts
than headers would be.
Anyone had any such problems with wrapping manifolds?
Also, anyone got any idea how much wrap I would need for the pair of manifolds? I would expect the manifolds to use less wrap than headers as there is
less surface area but then again the wrapping pattern is probably more awkward with more overlap. I think you can get wrap in either 1" or
2" widths and often in 10 metre lengths. How much would I need do you think?
Finally, how effectively does the wrap reduce engine bay heat? I need all the help I can get...
Thanks,
Craig.

Not had great deal of personal experience, but guys I know have said whilst it will reduce engine bay temp the heat is retained and therefore the
manifold itself gets hotter. I have seen a tubular manifold from a Mk1 Escort fall apart when the heatwrap was removed, it had just burnt the steel
away,as you say with a thicker cast material heat stress may be a factor and cracking might occur. Sorry not much help really but I can understand
your thoughts. Barry

i've read that wrapping cast iron manifold is a no-no.
can't remember reason why though - due to being less conductive, they run hotter and having much thicker wall, are more prone to crakcing?
maybe google can help you?

Yeah I'm not sure what to do - I need to reduce my engine bay temps a bit but I don't want to crack my manifolds. I'm actually a bit
surprised that my right hand manifold hasn't cracked already as I did a cut and shut on it to make it fit my needs and although I took a lot of
care with the welding I didn't expect it to last as long as it has.

I can't believe I started this thread over 5 years ago and have just found it again by googling about wrapping cast rover v8 manifolds...
Well, the latest is that I have bought some thermal wrap and am planning to wrap the manifolds and see what happens. In case anyone is interested, I
bought Thermo Tec graphite black wrap from Merlin Motorsport along with some stainless steel tie wraps and a spray on high heat coating which is
recommended to prolong the life of the wrap.
Will try to let you know how it goes, and hopefully not after another 5 years!
